How Often Should You Service Your AC in Central Florida?
Twice a year — not once. Here is why Central Florida's humidity, pollen, and nine-month cooling season wear systems faster than the national maintenance advice assumes.
In Central Florida, an air conditioner should be professionally serviced twice a year — once in early spring before cooling season ramps up, and once in the fall. That is more often than the "once a year" advice you will read nationally, and the reason is simple: our systems run nine to eleven months a year, in heavy humidity, through two pollen seasons.
Why twice a year here
A system in Ohio gets a four-month break every winter. An Orlando system rarely gets more than a few weeks off. That extra runtime means more compressor cycles, more condensate moving through the drain line, and more dust and pollen pulled across the coil.
Humidity is the second factor. Your AC removes gallons of water from the air every day in August. That water has to go somewhere, and a drain line that is not cleared annually will eventually back up — which is how a routine maintenance skip turns into water damage on a ceiling.
What a real maintenance visit includes
- Coil cleaning, indoor and outdoor
- Condensate drain line flush and safety switch test
- Refrigerant charge verification
- Capacitor and contactor testing (the two parts most likely to fail mid-summer)
- Blower amp draw and airflow check
- Thermostat calibration and safety controls
If a "tune-up" is 15 minutes and a filter change, it is not maintenance.
The cost math
A maintenance visit costs far less than one emergency call, and a neglected system loses roughly 5% of its efficiency per year. Over a 12-year life, that compounds into hundreds of dollars a year in wasted power — plus a shorter equipment life.
Between visits
Change your filter every 30–60 days, not 90. Keep two feet of clearance around the outdoor unit. Pour a cup of distilled vinegar down the condensate drain access every couple of months. And if the system starts short-cycling or the air feels humid even at setpoint, get it looked at before it fails.
